MoNsTeR PiLlOw....

I wanted to do something extra special for my boys for Easter instead of the norm....chocolate bunny, plastic eggs, new church outfit....I saw the most awesomest thing ever HERE and I instantly knew it was exactly what I wanted to make. Thank heavens for creative Women like Disney, they are truly my saving grace (especially since I learned how to sew in a straight line from one of her tutorials haha) !!

Introducing the COOLEST felt Monster Face Pillow....

Yep, you heard me...The pillow and all the pieces are made out of felt so they all stick together and it creates the best Mr. Potato Head-like game.

The possibilities are seriously endless...

(I totally learned how to make a collage in Picasa for this post, I love it! haha)
I seriously think I enjoy this thing as much (if not more LOL!) than the kids! It is THAT fun!

And the coolest part is that it has a cute pocket in the back to store all those little pieces.

Now since I'm such an over-achiever (haha totally kidding!) I couldn't merely stop there. I made two more pillows for my cutest nieces in the whole wide World, and designed some mighty fine girly pieces to go along with them.

I just realized my ears are on backwards...LOL...Oh well!

Doesn't it just make you feel like a kid all over again??? You NEED/MUST have one of these in your home. Seriously, I'm SERIOUS!! Go right HERE, right now for the tutorial.

My kids just got a quick sneak peak for pictures since it isn't Easter yet, and they are dying to try it out! They know there isn't an Easter Bunny (Andy is just way too smart) so I figured no big deal.

PS- I included all the boys pieces in the girl's pillows too, just for added fun! Plus, I secretly knew my Brother Solomon would totally be all over making himself some fun Monsters.  :)

Storytime "Planting a Rainbow"---Making a Rainbow Garden Craft

Last week we read "Planting a Rainbow" by Lois Ehlert. It was perfect for Spring since it's about a Mother and child who plant flower bulbs, seeds and plants and watch them grow into a rainbow of colorful blooms. What perfect timing since all the beautiful Spring flowers are starting to pop up in the neighborhood!

I chose to start this activity on a Monday so I could incorporate it into Family Home Evening (I know, clever huh? haha!) After we read the story we went on a walk around the neighborhood to try to spot out some of the pretty flowers we had seen in the book. We talked about what colors they were, what shapes they were, how they smelt, and also about how Heavenly Father created them for us to enjoy.

My favorite flowers we saw were these pretty purple ones in our front yard that are growing in between our rocks. I love to see them every day! Spring is such a beautiful time of the year!

When we got back home we reviewed the book again to point out which flowers we had seen and also to go over what the rainbow sequence colors were again.

A couple days later we read the book again and decided that we should make our own rainbow gardens. We took a piece of white construction paper and each colored the bottom of the paper brown for the ground, and then colored green flower stems coming out of the ground.

As prep before we started this activity I had cut out several different colored shapes to make our flowers out of. This was a bit tedious and time consuming but Andy helped me so it went a little bit faster. The magazine suggested using foam shape stickers, but I couldn't find any so I just made up my own. The best part is that if you decide you want to do this activity, I saved all my pages with the shapes on them so I could email them to you for you to print off.

Before we assembled our flowers we sorted our shapes by colors and then went through naming all of the different shapes. Since Luke is preschool age, it was perfect practice for him.

We also sorted them from least to greatest so we incorporated counting too. (Fabulous, I know! haha) The one thing I forgot to do is to have them make patterns out of the shapes, but you could totally do that too to practice patterns. We also practiced the rainbow song to know which colors came in what order in the rainbow. That was important because we needed to have our flowers in the correct order in our garden.

Then we practiced using the different shapes to make different flowers, whatever we could think of. The boys were super creative, I was impressed.

Finally, we glued our colorful shapes onto the paper to make our rainbow garden.

The boys took it a step further and colored a sun on the picture and even some roots under the flowers in the ground.

They turned out sooooo cute! And they are hanging on my fridge for me to smile at every day!  :)

So go check out this cute book from your local library and start smelling the pretty Spring flowers!!!

**I got the idea to read this book and make this craft from "The Mailbox" a magazine for Teacher's; However, I did make changes to the original craft idea as found in the magazine and the idea to sort, count, and make patterns from the shapes was solely from my own brain. haha
